Appalachian Trail Experience 2006: Just Gene

My AT adventure began on 4/4/06 at Springer Mtn was completed on 8/6/06 at Mt Katahdin. I averaged 18mi/day with an average pack weight of 40lbs. I resupplied every 2 weeks via mail drops and spent lots more money on food along the trail. I took a total of 8 days off spending 6 of them with my wife. I'm looking forward to doing it again...a bit more slowly the next time...:)

6/24/06 Saturday: Jackie picks me up in Pawling

I woke to the sound of raindrops and patted myself on the back for my efforts yesterday getting into town and avoiding walking in this rain... I had planned to go early today and walk about 16 miles across the NY/Conn border to a road were Jackie would pick me up but decided to stay put instead... A couple of factors were involved... First its raining, LOL... second, I had developed a rash over my neck, shoulders, and waist, either from rinsing off at the RPH shelter with that nasty water, or using the Deet borrowed from Switchback... Putting on my pack would be a bit painful as it was when I arrived yesterday.. I prefered to meet Jackie showered rather that yucky...LOL... I also had agreed to give a ride to another hiker who was staying at the house... Redbee and his dog LP (Low Profile-a daschound) I woke as usual at 0630 to find a very peaceful house... I made myself breakfast, some cereal, scrambled some eggs, had some toast, and got my stuff ready... The rain broke for a bit around 0930 and I decided to head the .7mi into town to check it out and visit the library to possibly use the computer. The town of Pawling was bustling for a Saturday morning, with the coffee shops full of local folks having breakfast, I stopped into a bagel shop for an onion bagel and cream cheese before stopping at the library which had extended hours for a Saturday from 10-4. They had 8 computers set up for internet use, 6 of them open so I sat down for the first time in more than 2weeks and checked my email and did a little blogging... After about an hour I decided to get some lunch across the street at another deli before returning to the house to pack up for Jackie... I got back to the house around 1300 and Jackie drove up about 1430 after a rather taxing commute from Newark, NJ... We had selected Newark Airport because I was originally expected to be somewhere in NJ, but my estimated daily miles were a bit low... LOL... Jackie looked great as she drove up the drive way... I was so proud of her, getting here on her own... We soon packed up and were headed north to drop Mike off in Mass. before returning to our hotel in Danbury, Conn. Jackie and I stopped into a beautiful old resort in Stockbridge for a lovely dinner outdoors, before finally returning to Danbury and retiring for the evening...
