Appalachian Trail Experience 2006: Just Gene

My AT adventure began on 4/4/06 at Springer Mtn was completed on 8/6/06 at Mt Katahdin. I averaged 18mi/day with an average pack weight of 40lbs. I resupplied every 2 weeks via mail drops and spent lots more money on food along the trail. I took a total of 8 days off spending 6 of them with my wife. I'm looking forward to doing it again...a bit more slowly the next time...:)

7. Had dinner here at Antietam Shelter, a very nice setting...

It was a nice cool morning, and I was out by 0815, a bit later than I wanted though... I did sleep well... I walked briskly the 5 miles to the Ensigh Cowall shelter and had to take a pic of this Memorial hut... I signed the journal, checked for entries of others I knew who were ahead of me, had a snack and was quickly off... I passed a couple of southbound hikers, the second of which caught my eye... An elderly Japanese gentleman from Tokyo who was going to Harpers Ferry from Dartmouth College, NH. we stopped and chatted to about 20min. He recounded a few stories of previous hikes, in his broken english, and was very proud of his AT experiences. He is only given a 2 month visa for each visit, and this is his third section hike... and he was loving it!!! WOW... I crossed Md491 and made my way to Raven Rock Hollow... We havent had many vistas in Maryland, but when we get em, they are astonishing... I continued on to PenMar County Park, Cascade, MD for lunch and once again couldnt believe the view, this time from my picnic table... WOW... Also got some Trail Majic there, with some great company for lunch... After 75min it was time to go and cross over to Pensylvania...:) I wanted to take a picture bye the Mason-Dixon Line sign but someone stole the damn thing...LOL... I still had a ways to go so I continued on to have Dinner at the Antietam Shelter, a lovely setting bye a brooke. The shelter is on the outskirts of a state park, the trail leading through it and right by a water tap on the way to my final destination of the night Tumbling Run Shelter... There was only one other hiker there, I set up in the shelterfor a peaceful nights sleep...
